Summer Fireflies (April to June)
Alishan owns one-third of the amount of fireflies in Taiwan. The firefly species may found in Alishan area, including precious Luciola cerata, Curtos sauteri Olivier, Luciola anceyi, and Luciola satoi Jeng and Yang.
Winter Fireflies (December to January)
As a natural preserve in the mountains of Chiayi County, Alishan Scenic Area is the home of many ecosystems. The twinkling, sparkling fireflies can be seen not only during springtime (April to June) but also during winter in Alishan area! There are four kinds of winter fireflies in Taiwan, including Diaphanes niveus, Diaphanes lampyroides, Diaphanes flavilateralis and Diaphanes nubilus. Winter fireflies are rather precious, and can only be found in Taiwan, Japan, India, Himalaya Mountains and Tibetan plateau. Winter fireflies are best viewed from December to January during the hour after sunsets. The winter fireflies may be found in the forest of Fenchihu area sparkling in yellow-green lights.
