Many food vendors from Shilin Night Market are famed for their exclusive flavors that are only available at the Shilin Night Market. Some of the famous stalls and delights in Shilin include Hot-Star Deep Fried Chicken Cutlet, Shilin Traditional Store’s small roll in a large roll, oyster omelet, Taiwanese style tempura, green onion cake and fried steamed bun, sausage wrapped in glutinous rice, bubble ice, stewed ribs in Chinese herbal soup and many more.

Yong Kang Street is a famous gourmet stop in Taipei City for there are several traditional and internationally renowned delicacies such as Xiao Long Bao of Din Tai Fung Dumpling House and Kao Chi Dumpling House and Yong-Kang Street Beef Noodles. Ding Tai Fung is famed for its Xiao Long Bao (Small Steamed Dumplings) that has been ranked as one of the world’s top 10 restaurants by The New York Times in November, 2009. Today, it is a famous Taiwanese restaurant chain that has branches in many international cities with 2 of its Hong Kong branches both awarded one Michelin star. Ding Tai Fung’s steamed dumplings are noted for the very thin skins that are delicately made to keep the stuffing juicy with a fresh and refine tasting. 

Beef noodles are a very popular dish in Taiwan that can be found over the island, with every neighborhood owning its own distinctive flavors. Yong Kang Street is one of the places in Taipei that one would think of when they are looking for beef noodles. There are a number of beef noodle houses in Yong Kang neighborhood, Yong-Kang Beef Noodle restaurant is one of the most famous among those. The restaurant was only a street stall near Yong Kang Street in the early stage opened by a demobilized solider. The special thick broad-bean chili sauce with soup base cooked naturally without condiment and beefs with good taste are what made the beef noodles of Yong-Kang Beef Noodle restaurant famous. Other famous beef noodle shops in Yong Kang Street include Lao Zhang, which has been voted the best beef noodle soup in the 2006 Taipei Beef Noodles Festival.

Ximending is a vibrant stop in Taipei City for wide range of entertainments, shopping and eating. Signature foods in Ximending area include Simon Tempura, Lautianlu Braised Food and Ay-Chung Flour-Rice Noodle Resturant since 1975. Ay-Chung Flour Rice Noodle serves very thin rice noodles (rice vermicelli) stewed with pig’s intestines and topped with your own choice of soy sauce, garlic, vinegar or Ay-Chung’s specially made chili sauce, delivering a simple yet unique Taiwanese dish. It is a very popular dish that one may often find long line waiting. There are neither seats nor tables as the dish is made to be a snack.

Lautianlu Braised Food earned its fame during the 1950s to 1980 when Ximending was filled with cinemas, and every moviegoer had a bag of braised foods from Laotianlu. This local delicacy was carried beyond the borders to other countries by Hong Kong celebrities in the 1990s, and since then this treat become a must-try special for one’s Taipei travel. Laotianlu features mouth-watering braise foods from carefully selected ducks and stewed them in their secret recipe braising sauce that the flavor seeps deep into the meat that delivers a tender taste as you chew.

Simon Tempura is another signature food stop of Ximending that serves Taiwanese-style tempura, in business for over 50 years. Today, Simon Tempura not only can be found in Ximending area, but also food court of many department stores in Taiwan. It was first established at the corner of Kaifeng Street, where one may have to win traditional marble and dart games in order to get a bowl of tempura. These distinctive ways of selling and good taste of tempura were favored by the neighborhood. Later, it opened Taiwan’s first tempura shop. Simon Chinese style tempura is often served with soup made from Katsuo delivering a fresh and refreshing taste.

Iron Eggs – These eggs are repeatedly stewed in a mix of spices and are air-dried, resulting dark brown in texture, eggs are chewy and full of flavor.
