The uniqueness of these local sculptors is their ability to carve life-like animals and Buddhist figures from giant tree roots or strange-looking branches. In fact, Sanyi has not always been an area of wood sculpting. It all started in 1918 when a local man used the withered camphor wood to created a series of home décor, which Japanese officials (Taiwan was under Japanese rule at the time) found the charms with the wood carving items, and inspired to develop the wood industry in Sanyi area. At the prime time, there were 100 to 200 wood carving businesses at the town.
Today, when you visit the Sanyi, you can visit the Wood Sculpture Museum which was established in March, 1990. This is the only museum in Taiwan with wood carving as its theme, and possesses a wide-range collection of wood carving works, including religious items, furniture, and folk art objects. It also has a wood carving classroom and a library. Visitors can take the personal tour guides; join the DIY wood carving sessions.
