After Chiang Kai-Shek retreated to Taiwan from China in 1949, in order to host foreign ambassadors, he instructed to build this prestigious hotel. The hotel was established in 1952, but it was going through several expending to become the hotel now. Inside the Grand Hotel, there is swimming pool, tennis court, pavilions, etc. When the hotel opened in the beginning, there were always secret whispering about the hidden passageway ran from The Grand Hotel to the president office near Shilin area. This hidden passage was built for Chiang’s safety escape. The truth was unveiled after 1995 that there were two underground passageways for 180 m in length which extended to nearby park, and the president office. Currently the underground passageways open to public by appointment booking.
