Tianxiang (Tianhsiang) is one of the landmarks within the Taroko National Park. It is a river terrace, which occupies the area in between Zhonghen Highway (Central Cross-Island Highway ) in Xiulin Town and east side of the spectacular Taroko Gorge at juncture area of Dasha River, Liwu River, and Daxi Jili River.

Tianxiang (Tianhsiang) was originally named “Tupido”, which means Arenga Westerhoutii and was also the residence of the Truku aboriginal tribe. It was later renamed Tianxiang (Tianhsiang) to commemorate Wen, Tian-Xiang, who was a scholar-general in the last years of the Southern Song Dynasty. With the location at the center of the fascinating Taroko Gorge, Tianxiang possess fascinating sceneries with a delightful climate making it a popular scenic area for one’s Hualien travel.

Tianxiang (Tianhsiang) features spectacular geographical landscapes such as meanders, marbles, potholes, as well as different color of schist and phyllite forming picturesque sceneries. In addition, Taroko Euphorbia Sieboldiana and Taroko Oak are 2 types of rare plants that can be found in the broad-leaved forest of Tianxiang Recreation Area.

Other attractive highlights of Tianxiang include Xiangde Temple and Tiangfeng Pagoda. Within Xiangde Temple area, visitors may find an impressive large white-robed statue of Guanyin, and a great statue of Ksitigarbha, which is noted as the highest Ksitigarbha statue in the world.

No. 5 National Highway: From Nangang Interchange (南港交流道) of No. 3 National Highway (國道3號/北二高) connect to No. 5 National Highway (國道5號/北宜高速公路) -> Xueishan Tunnel (雪山隧道) -> Suao Interchange (蘇澳交流道) -> No. 9 Provincial Highway (台9號) -> No. 8 Provincial Highway (台8線) -> Cihmu Bridge (慈母橋) -> Tianxiang (天祥)

By Bus:
Visitors may take direct Hualien Bus to Tianxiang (天祥). Hualien Bus (花蓮客運) is available next to the Hualien Train Station (花蓮火車站). It takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes from the Hualien Train Station to Tianxiang.
