Laiji is the heart of Alishan which is surrounded by mountains along with Alishan river. It is 700 to 1000 meters above sea level. Laiji has a population of 440 people and 94% of them are aborigines.

There is a tale of Laiji. Long time ago, a Tefuye hunter went north and discovered a fertile land. He tried to plant millet on this land, and it came out with great result. He moved his family here, and many other people had move to this place by its good reputation. Due to their hard work, the hills became the terraced fields.

Laiji’s major crops are bamboo shoots, jelly figs, high mountain tea leaves, and high mountain vegetables. Laiji is famous for its nature environment especially the forest, waterfall, and high mountains. The 2,600 meters high Ta Mountain is divinely to Laiji aborigines. The scenic nature environment of Laiji is one of the reasons that Alishan tourism became popular.

There are three main travel spots in Laiji, and all three are great scenic spots for hiking. First is the Ta Mountain lane along with Ta Mountain gate, Goat gate, the Watchtower, and Spring Water Celestial cavity. Second lane has Shengang waterfall and Sibisi cliff. Last one is the trails to Caoling, Fenchihu, and Shichilu.
