Tainan Park is one of the oldest parks in Tainan city. The park used to call Zhong Shan Park or be referred to Sun Yat-Sen Park. This beautiful historic park first appearance on the island is around Qing dynasty; it was around1674. This park has been through Qing Dynasty and Japanese ruling period. This centuries-old heritage used to be a “tropical experimental forest” under Japanese rules with broad range of cypress trees around, a giant ancient puti tree, cotton trees that make the park has distinct four seasons’ look. Walking through the park you will see a grand traditional Chinese fountain as Tainan park icon, several pavilions, stone arched footbridges, lily ponds, library, and amphitheater. Furthermore, Tainan Park contains several pieces of historic relics, like the Pan Gao Stone Archway and the Ms. Xiao Chastity Archway. Tainan Park houses are the few remaining Qing dynasty stone archways. In Chinese culture, archways are for honoring people who had great dedication in loyalty to the country. The archways in Tainan Park were built in 1815, and were originally located near the Confucius Temple, but were torn down by the Japanese in order for road construction. Later the descendants made the effort to move the arches back to pay the respect to the ancestors.
