Located at Fuyuan Village at Ruisui, Hualien County, the Fuyuan Forest Recreation Area is currently the largest woodland of camphor trees in Taiwan. It spreads over 235 hectares of land, covering the entire region and the lower section of Fuyuan Waterfalls.

The main attractions of Fuyuan Forest are the Butterfly Valley and the Fuyuan Waterfalls where camphor trees and hot springs spread throughout these areas. As you roam from tree to tree and bathe yourself within the geothermal delight, you will find sets of butterflies fluttering around you. The prime period to catch a glimpse of the variety of colorful butterflies is from April to July. Along both sides of the valley, more than 40 species of attractive butterflies live amongst the camphor woodland and the virgin forest.

The unique rock formation along the valley streams is wonderful and relaxing scenery. Following the trails to the upper stream you will find the Fuyuan Waterfalls where a dam built below has created a deep pool where cascading water pours aggressively into it. The water flowing from the dam also forms another curtain of water, crystal clear with fluent grace. The view here is truly magnificent and breathtaking. Near the waterfalls, there are BBQ pits, campsites, a jungle training compound and hiking trails, which leads to the nearby valley. It’s a great getaway camping location for the weekend.
