Located within the fascinating Taroko National Park in Hualien, Taiwan, near Xiulin Town, the Eternal Spring Shrine is a memorial shrine to commemorate the 212 veterans who passed away during the construction of the Central Cross-Island Highway from 1956 through 1960.
Eternal Spring Shrine is also known as the Changchun Shrine, meaning eternal ancestral shrine literally. The name of the shrine comes from the nearby Changchun Falls that runs year-round. The shrine is built right above the waterfall streams, offering picturesque views of mountains and the waterfall. It is noted as one of the most photographed sites in the Taroko National Park.
One can reach the Eternal Spring Shrine via walking through the Changchun Bridge. The way to the shrine is a bit risky due to a number of landslides that have rendered the trail. Set behind the shrine is the Eternal Spring Trail, which is a 2km-long upgoing stone cave and is known as the “Heavenly Ladder” that leads to the Guanyin Cave for the statues of Guanyin and greater views overlooking the spectacular surroundings.
