Originally named Samagi, Xiao Liuqiu Island is a small island off the coast of southwestern Pingtung County, Taiwan. This outlying Taiwan Island has long been described as a paradise on the sea for it is full of treasures for visitors to explore.  It was first resided by Lee Yue’s family, when he found the island gifted for copious fishes and nice weather and made living on fishery. The island looks like a ball drifting on the sea, from which Liuchiu, meaning drifting ball was named. To different Okinawa, Japan, which the island has the same pronunciation in Chinese, the island is so called Xiao Liuqiu (Little Liuqiu) by the locals.   Xiao Liuqiu Island is the only coral reef island among 14 outlying islands of Taiwan with a total area about 6.802 square kilometers. There are eight villages, four elementary schools, and one middle school on the island. It can be explored within a 30 minute nonstop ride along the island highway    As part of Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area, Xiao Liuqiu Island can simply be accessed through a 20 minute ferry ride from Pingtung Dongliu Harbor. Xiao Liuqiu attracts many visitors each day for its crystal clear water on sandy rocky beaches, gorgeous natural attractions and the real Taiwan temple culture.    Although Xiao Liuqiu Island is rather a small island, it is full of natural marvels includes Beauty Hole, Duozaiping Tidal Zone, Wild Boar Trench, Geban Bay (Venice Beach), Black Devil Cave, Houshi Fringing Reef, Zhungou Sand Beach, as well as its fabulous landmark- Flower Vase Rock. The Flower Vase Rock is a coral-limestone with an appearance like a flower vase. It is about 9 meters high, with green grass on the crag making the rock like a giant vase standing in the waters.    Today, the island is visited by hundreds of visitors each day not only for the natural marvels, Xiao Liuchiu is also a popular destination for scuba diving for its crystal clear water and untouched underwater beauties. The evening tour at Xiao Liuqiu is also a favored activity for visitors to explore the nocturnal animals, plants, as well as fascinating intertidal that can only be seen during good weather.
