Lanyu, meaning Orchid Island, is an island 76 Km off the coast of southeast Taitung. It spreads over a 46 square meter land. It is home of the Yami Tribe which is the smallest and most primitive tribe in Taiwan. The island was originally named Red Head Island but was later renamed Lanyu due to the abundance of wild orchids grown across the island. It is fringed by coral rock formations in most parts of the island although you can also find small stretches of sandy beaches here and there. It is an isolated yet beautiful island.

The main scenic spots are scattered along the 37 meter road that acts as the circumference of the island. Hikers may hike up the highest point on the island called the Taling Mountain. There is a natural lake on the peak called Sky Pond (Thienche). This island is a paradise for fishing enthusiasts. Grand scale fishing tournaments are held here frequently. Nearby, on the rugged coastline of the Yeahyu (meaning coconut oil) Village, due to years of erosion and seabed movements, there are some of the most rare species of seashells and fish. It is therefore, also a popular diving spot. The best visiting time is between April and June when weather is mild and breezy.
