Smangus is located at 1,500 meter altitude in Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County. In the deep forest mountain, one of Taiwan aboriginal tribes-Atayal settled in here. This is also the most remote and last village in Taiwan that has access to electricity (in 1979). Before the discovery of ancient red cypress trees, the village people was completely cut off from the outside world, and they would take four to five hours' walk through the mountainous area to the nearest village to replenish their daily supplies. When the outsiders discovered the three top ranked red cypress trees on the island all located in Smangus, tourists started to come visit these giant magnificent trees after the road construction finished in 1995.

If you want to free yourself from the hectic urban life, Smangus will be a perfect weekend escape. You can experience the tribal life style and customs in Samgus, try the traditional Atayal feasts and seasonal fresh fruits. They also have home stay lodging of cozy wood cabins in different size rooms. You can check with the local administration office for the lodging information and the seasonal outdoor activities they offer.

Directions:

Because the village is located in such an obscure place, driving will be the best way to get there. Take the Northern National Highway No.3(Freeway No.3)(北二高) to Hsinchu and get off at the Chulin Junction (竹林交流道). Then take County Route 120 to go on the Provincial Highways 3 (台三線). From there, take Route 60 to go into the mountains, then make a left when you hit the Jinping Bridge (錦屏大橋). Follow the signs that point you in Xuo Luang’s (秀巒) direction
