Located in Ta Shu of Kaohsiung City, Fo Guan Shan Monastery is the biggest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan, with the name literally means “Buddha’s Light Mountain”. Fo Guang Shan Monastery is founded in 1967 by Venerable Master in promoting Humanistic Buddhism, covering an area more than 30 hectares comprised of university buildings, shrines, and a cemetery in the first place. Later in 1975 and 1981, a 36-meter tall state of Amitabha Buddha and the Great Hero Hall were established. During these times, over 200 Fo Guang Shan branch temples were built outside the order’s mother monastery.

Fo Guang Shan was once closed to the general public in May 1997 until the end of year 2000 to providing the monastic the cloistered atmosphere for their Buddhist practice. Covering a large area over 30 hectares, Fo Guang Shan Monastery is covered by green forests and the monastery is set on the top of the mountain with great views overlooking the surroundings. There are more than 100,000 statues around the monastery that create solemn atmosphere. Today, Fo Guang Shan temples and organizations have been established over 173 countries throughout the world that encompass more than 3,500 monastic. The organization emphasizes in a wide range of fields, including education and service, publishing, translation, Buddhist art galleries, teahouses, mobile medical clinics and many others in carrying out the goals in the ideas of Humanistic Buddhism and establishing a pure land on earth.

By Bus:
1. Take Kaohsiung Bus (高雄客運) bound for Qishan (旗山), Meinong (美濃), Jiaxian (甲仙), or Liugui (六龜) to Fo Guang Shan Monastery (佛光山).

2. Take Fo Guang Shan Monastery shuttle bus from Fo Guang Shan Taipei Vihara (佛光山台北道場) or Pumen Temple (普門寺) to Fo Guang Shan Monastery (佛光山). Please contact Fo Guang Shan Monastery in advance for shuttle service hours.
