The 921 Earthquake in 1999, broken thousands of homes, is one of the major natural tragedies in Taiwan. The act of god destroyed many but crafted something extraordinary in return. An area of natural forest high up in the mountain of Xitou died from the blockage of the river. What was a plain forest of Cedar then became a swampland with dead trees everywhere in the middle of the swamps.

Forest of Forgetting Sorrow, the name was given by the local hikers. The name Wanyo meaning forgetting sorrow in Chinese explained a little how this dead forest may look. This work of god is a quiet clear swampland with cedars planted randomly in the swamps, beautiful scenery described only in fairytales. The dead cedars ironically correspond with the living creatures in the swamp. High up in the mountains, it seems vivid and alive in good weather, however, shady and mysterious when it’s foggy. This magnificent view will not just take away your sorrows but take your breath away definitely. To visit the forest, it will take you around 30 minutes to hike up there on a very steep hill. The locals provide mini-bus rides around NT$ 100 per person that will save you the walk Parking space and fee are included. Wearing hiking shoes or boots is encouraged because getting through the swampland on foot is still necessary.

The Forest of Forgetting Sorrow (Wanyo Forest) is a hot attraction in the Xitou area. It is a scene nowhere else to be seen that you will enjoy wondering in the mysterious swampland with cool breeze brushing upon you. Visit this forest is absolutely an unforgettable experience.
