Pingtung Hakka Cultural Museum is located in Zhutian, one of the Liudui. The name Liudiu came from the historical event, when the Hakka people in the Southern Taiwan united to defend their home from the outside in 1721. Liudiu meaning “six unit” was the uniting of six large Hakka village. Wanrang was the pioneer unit, Zhutian was the middle unit, Neipu was the back unit, Changzhi and Linglo was the front unit, Chiatung and Hsinpi was the left unit, Kaohshu and Meinong was the right unit. The Liudiu included every Hakka village within Kaohsiung and Pintung. Pingtung Hakka Cultural Museum stored three hundred years of Hakka historical artifacts and documents for exhibition in promoting Hakka culture and the historical event.

Pingtung Hakka Cultural Museum opened in 2001. Since the Hakka plays a huge part in Taiwan culture and had their unique habits and way of life comparing to other Chinese in Taiwan, Passing down the legacy is the main purpose of the museum. The museum was a hollow dome-like two story building; it is a traditional Hakka design. The first floor was the exhibition room of the history of Hakka tracking down when they first move to Taiwan from China, geological information, and historical events. The second floor focused on introducing the way of living, food, clothes, architect, customs and festivals. The basement is where they kept artifacts categorizing in things in bedrooms, study rooms and farming equipments.

Pingtung offers heavy Hakka culture, other attractions like Liudui Hakka Cultural Park, Wangran, Zhutian Station, and Wugosui Community. It is a great place where you can get a taste in food, customs and the people of Hakka.
