The Red Theatre is an ancient landmark of Ximen on Chengdou Rd with a history of almost a century old. It is a 2-storey octagonal architecture comprised of red tiles and bricks, and on the inside the roof is supported by a skeleton of metal bones in a shape of an umbrella. Started off as a public market place, the Red Theatre had evolved throughout decades to become the multi-functional building of today. From a performing arts centre to a movie cinema, the Red Theatre had always been the favourite entertainment site for Taiwanese people. However, during the 70s, eastern Taipei had developed into a new civic recreational district, overshadowing the popularity of Ximen. Red Theatre had been long forgotten since. The miracle came in 2002 when the Paperwindmill Cultural Foundation brought about change via the renovation scheme. The Red Theatre was redesigned into a whole new 'people magnet'. The newly furnished first floor contains a shopping ground, creative arts showroom, and a Paperwindmill Cafe. Here you can enjoy the ultimate entertainment experience with a drop of artistic essence and cuppucino. On the 2nd floor, an entire room had been developed into an assembly hall. With mobile chairs and tables, the red interior has a spacious capacity that can house up to 200 people. Along with 5 x 7 metre square of performance stage and the latest technical equipment, the Red Theatre offers renting service to the public who wishes to hold parties, organisational events, or even shows.
