Zhonghua Gate was built under the orders of the first Ming Emperor, Hongwu, from 1360 to 1386. It is the greatest ancient city gate in China with the most complex structure in the world. Zhonghua Gate was made by huge strip stones and large Chinese bricks; it's located in the southern of nanjing City over 600 years. The dimensions of the gate were 118.5m from east to west and 128m from south to north. There were three barbicans connected by four arched gates. Each of arched gates could be opened up and down with a pair of very heavy wooden doors. Behind the gate, there are three courtyards. During an attack, enemy forces that breached the gate could be trapped in these courtyards.Zhonghua Gate is a great engineering project of complex and intricate design.
