Zhonghua Gate was built under the orders of the first Ming Emperor, Hongwu, from 1360 to 1386. It is the greatest ancient city gate in China with the most complex structure in the world. Zhonghua Gate was made by huge strip stones and large Chinese bricks; it's located in the southern of nanjing City over 600 years. The dimensions of the gate were 118.5m from east to west and 128m from south to north. There were three barbicans connected by four arched gates. Each of arched gates could be opened up and down with a pair of very heavy wooden doors. Behind the gate, there are three courtyards. During an attack, enemy forces that breached the gate could be trapped in these courtyards.Zhonghua Gate is a great engineering project of complex and intricate design. The gate strength is good for military operation and is a valuable sample for the study of Chinese military history. Today Zhonghua Gate is known as the Gate of China as Jubao Gate. Gate of China signify its status as gate of the nation and Jubao Gate means "Gathering Treasure Gate" in Chinese. The vast scale and sophisticated style of the gate is rare in the world. You will find an interesting museum has been built into the battlements during you visit the gate.
