Gulang Yu is a tranquil island laying only a 10 minutes boat ride from Xiamen. As people gave it a beautiful name "The Island of Piano", this little island had become famous with its attractive buildings and exclusive music culture in China. In 2005, Gulang Yu had been selected to be "The Most Beautiful Area in China" by China National Geographic magazine. Spread over one square mile, the island is very pleasant to explore on foot. No vehicles are allowed on the island except the electrical bus. Its tiny streets and elegant houses, fronted by pretty flower gardens with hospitable climate make an alluring atmosphere of southern fishing village. Close to the ferry terminal is Xiamen Seaworld, which makes up an interesting collection of sharks, seals dolphins, penguins and tropical fish. To the southeast of the island is the Statue of Koxinga, which commemorates Xiamen's famous rebel, the legendary pirate and Ming dynasty loyalist "Koxinga". His troop also held out against the encroaching Manchus for years. He also helped with ousting the Dutch from Taiwan. His legendary life between Taiwan Strait ended in 1662 and left a complex appraisal to afterworld. However, this person who may be the top enemy of Qing Dynasty will be alive in the heart of people around Fujian and Taiwan Island.
