City Overview
Located at the north of France on the Seine River, Paris is the capital and the largest city of the country. Paris has a population of 2.2 million people and the greater Paris has a population of 12 million people. It is, in fact, one of the most populated metropolitan areas in Europe and the world. The Seine River winds through Paris, spanned by 30 bridges, and flows 110 miles northwest into the English Channel. Though occupied by the Germans during the World War II, Paris was little damaged. It was liberated in August, 1944. Post-war expansion was particularly striking beyond the western edge of the city.
All over Paris there are especially reminders of France's 1789 Revolution, when the monarchy was swept away and equal rights for all citizens were established under the law. During the French Revolution, peasants across the country rose in revolt against the nobility and clergy. The terror and bloodbath had not halted until Napoleon's rise into power.
