Loy Krathong

Loy Krathong is one of the most vivid, traditional festivals of Thailand. The word “Loy” literally means “to float” and “Krathong” means a “lantern”. During the evening of the festival, locals would float lanterns that are traditionally made from a section of a banana trunk with a coin and candlelit on waterways around the kingdom to pay respect to the goddess of the waters. Loy Krathong is celebrated during the full moon of the 12th month of Thai lunar calendar, usually falls in November in western calendar.

Other than floating “Krathong”, there are usually carnivals at the temples that are nearby waterways for folklore games, local performances, as well as local delights that always attract large number of crowds to enjoy a splendid evening. Today, Krathong are not only made by bamboo, but has also been developed to be made of bread or Styrofoam as an alternative form. Here in Bangkok, visitors may find people assemble along the banks of Chao Phraya River, the lake in Lumpini Park, and temples that are nearby waterways.
