The 15th day of the 1st Lunar month is the Chinese Lantern Festival and the night of bright Full Moon. During the celebrations of the Lantern Festival in Taiwan, visitors may find thousands of colourful lanterns, while children would carry lanterns and solve riddles for a joyful festival.

This year, the 2011 Taipei Lantern Festival will be occupying the areas nearby Taipei City Council Hall and the National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall from February 11 through February 20, 2011. “Lucky Rabbit” is the centrepiece of the 2011 Taipei Lantern Festival for the rabbit is the Chinese zodiacal animal of the year. The “Lucky Rabbit” centrepiece carries different meanings include wishing upon a good fortune for the country and citizens, as well as urging for more children.

The “Lucky Rabbit” is designed by the famous paper sculpture artist, Hsin-Fu Hung. It is mainly colored in pink with big, round dynamic eyes symbolizing a vibrant society, large ears to represent an attentive and tolerant nation, while the gigantic front teeth connote health, blissfulness and amiability. In addition, the bat-shaped tail stands for the arrival of good fortune and the round belly for fruitfulness.

Limited lanterns will also be given-out at the exit on RenAi Rd. of the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and the main entrance of Taipei City Council Hall.

Sun Moon Lake, located in Yuzih Town of Nantou County, is Taiwan’s largest lake with its eastern part round like the sun and western side shaped like a crescent moon. Sun Moon Lake’s crystalline; emerald green waters that reflect the surrounding hills and mountains create picturesque sceneries that attract large numbers of both local and international travelers.

The Sun Moon Lake International Swimming Carnival is not a competitive timed race, but a mass participation cross-lake swim crosses one side of Sun Moon Lake to the other, where everyone must swim between the course markings. This year, the 2012 Sun Moon Lake International Swimming Carnival will be held on September 16, 2012. The registration period is from 8am of 2012/7/10 till 6pm on 2012/8/1. Participants are strongly recommended to register early as only limited numbers of participants are allowed.

The annual Sun Moon Lake International Swimming Carnival is a gathering of grand history with huge scale; Each autumn since 1983, competitive swimmers from Taiwan and overseas fill up the lake, creating a spectacular sight. The cross-lake, 3.3km, open swim event aims at “promoting the beauty of Sun Moon Lake and to make friends by means of the swimming activity” and is recognized as an international sport activity. The Puli Four-Season Swimming Association is proud to be the event organizer for the past 25 years and welcomes all swimmers to take part of this annual phenomenon at Taiwan’s Sun Moon Lake!
