The Lantern Festival is the first festival to be celebrated on January 15th of the lunar calendar after the Chinese New Year. It is also the very first full moon day of the New Year symbolizing a fortunate coming of springtime. During the day of the Lantern Festival, family members would gather to enjoy a family dinner eating Yuanxiao (glutinous rice dumpling), children would carry lanterns as well as solving lantern riddles for a joyful evening. Flying sky lanterns in Pingxi Town of Taipei County, throwing firecrackers at Master Han Dan in Taitung, shooting the Yanshui Firecrackers in Tainan and Bombing the Dragon in Miaoli are other vivid events and activities happening over Taiwan during this festival.

The year 2011 is not only a new year to Taiwan but also the 100th anniversary of Taiwan. The 2011 Taiwan Lantern Festival will be occupying the areas of Jhunan(Zhunan) Sports Park and Toufen Sports Park from Feb 17, 2011 through Feb 28, 2011. There will be a masterpiece of rabbit lantern, and many other lanterns of different themes, shapes, sizes and colors. Rabbit is the animal of year 2011 for that there are twelve animals of Chinese zodiac.

As part of Taiwan centennial celebrations, a total of 100 rabbit and 47,759 lanterns are to be seen at the 2011 Miaoli Lantern Festival to break the Guinness World Record. A “Centennial Lantern Area” is also designed for people to pray for blissfulness, and a Taiwan map composed of bicolor lanterns. Other highlights include a lantern parade, and a rabbit story house of Peter Rabbit, Alice in Wonderland and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
