March 23rd in lunar calendar is the birth of Mazu, and each temple will have its own celebration which is the biggest religious activity every year. The Chaotian Temple in Beigang, Yunlin County is the oldest Mazu temple in Taiwan known for its extravagant temple architecture, and it has been designated as Class II National Historic Site. Many other Mazu temples throughout Taiwan were established as offshoots from it. Every year, more than a million pilgrims come to worship the goddess of the sea or experience an important form of folk culture in Taiwan.
March of Lunar calendar is always known as Mazu Madness in March that numerous religious activities are arranged every year. On April 28th, 2013, Beigang Chaotian Temple hosts a 2-day pilgrimage that numbers rituals will be performed before departure for praying for blessings, safe and peace, and after the ceremony, thousands of pilgrims will follow Mazu’s statue carried by the sedan begins their touring procession. Beigang Mazu pilgrimage has many special features different from other pilgrimages, such as exquisitely carved and decorated art pavilions, bombarding the palanquin and a traditional way which originated from Beigang to light up firecrackers. Everyone is welcomed to experience the unique image of Beigang and their devotion to carrying on the heritage.
