The Chinese New Year is the largest festival in the Chinese culture, and a series of celebration will continue from the Chinese New Year’s Eve to the Lantern Festival, thus the completion of the whole Chinese New Year Celebration. The Bombing Master of Han Dan is a unique ceremony held annually in Taitung during the Chinese New Year period. It is recognized as one of the three most significant Chinese New Year customs of Taiwan, along with the Sky Lanterns Festival in Pingxi, New Taipei City and the Yanshui Beehive Firecrackers in Tainan.

There are many versions behind the legend of Master Han Dan. To which is real, it is unclear. One of the popular versions goes by, the Master Han Dan is said that to be a rich Shang Dynasty military general named Chao Gong-Ming, who later became the god in charge of wealth. It is said that he was afraid of the cold; hence, by throwing firecrackers at him may keep him warm, and people believe that the more firecrackers they throw, the more bliss and wealth they shall earn on the following year. On the day of Lantern Festival, the 15th day of January according to Lunar Calendar, a chosen man will perform in the role of the Master Han Dan who will wear nothing but a pair of red short pants and carrying a banyan tree branch to protect his face while standing on a chair of a cart. The followers will throw fireworks and firecrackers at him to keep him warm to pray for fortune. This is a very exciting and cultural festival, attracting a large group of local and foreigners to visit Taitung to participate in the most unique local custom.

The event concerns a massive usage of firecrackers and fireworks. Smokes and hazardous situation may occur. Please be extra careful on site, always dress in long sleeves shirts and pants, apply earplugs, hat and mask. Do not engage or cross in the front of the parade and watch out for sharp objects of the Chinese artifacts. Pay attention to your own physical conditions (special heart conditioned and pregnant women), standing or lining for a long period of time may be necessary. Watch out for the safety of your friends, family and enjoy a good time.
