The Hot Air Balloon Fiesta grows more and more popular each year, as well as in Taiwan. After 3 hot air balloon festivals finished successfully during summer, Sun Moon Lake hosts its first hot air balloon festival at Xiangshan Visitor Center from 2013/09/09-2013/09/16. Xiangshan Visitor Center is a special designed building with wood-patterned exteriors and wings that stretch like human arms embracing the earth. With a higher altitude location, the visitor center offers stunning views of the Sun Moon Lake from the top. Travelers may also find many tourist information and local exhibitions here for you to acquaint with Nantou’s culture and histories. It is the first hot air balloon festival held at Sun Moon Lake Area, providing a unique opportunity to ride in a hot air balloon in the sky overlooking the fabulous landscapes of Sun Moon Lake and surrounding mountains.

In addition to enjoying the beautiful views and relaxing atmosphere, visitors are invited to try a special Sun Moon Lake black tea has a smooth and sweet taste. It is a kind of Assam tea which was developed and cultivated since 1925 in the region surrounding Sun Moon Lake in central Taiwan. With the best soil and climate for cultivation, the tea leaves are thicker and richer with a unique sweet aroma and strong mint taste make it become as popular as the Assam tea from India and Ceylon. It is also the best ingredient to make Taiwan’s well-known beverage-Bubble Tea.
The tethered hot air balloon rides are scheduled to fly at dusk every 5:30 am- 8:00 am and 16:00 pm-18:00 pm from September 9th till September 16th. A fare is TWD500/person/ride, and tickets can be purchased at the venue or reserved online. However, ballooning is extremely weather dependent; hence, the schedule may be adjusted without prior notice. The program of the festival also includes plenty to see and do in a unique setting, including tethered hot air balloon rides, Black Tea Exhibition, Tea & Snack Exhibition, Tea Culture Event, as well as music concert.
