Xujiahui Catholic Cathedral, also known as Cathedral of St. Ignatius, is the largest Catholic cathedral in Shanghai and is capable of occupying more than 2,500 worshippers at once. Being the most spectacular cathedral at the time, Xujiahui Catholic Cathedral was the first cathedral built after the Opium War in China. The cathedral has a grand Middle Age Roman Gothic design and is 28 meters by 79 meters in width and height. During the Cultural Revolution, the cathedral was severely damaged and all activities were forced to be ceased. Later on, the Xujiahui Catholic Cathedral was re-established and re-opened to the public in 1980 in Shanghai City.
