The Louvre Museum features the original version of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, the world's most famous painting, and the Louvre is one of the largest and one of the world's most well-known museums. Of course there are many museums all over Paris, and all over Europe, but if you can only visit one, the Louvre is for sure one of your top choices. This museum had a long history of being formerly a fortress, a royal palace, and a royal residence, in addition to a grand museum. At the central courtyard is the famous Louvre glass pyramid built in 1989. The entrance to the galleries lies right below the glass pyramid. The Louvre Museum holds the rich artistic heritage, ever since the early Kings through the Empire of Napoleon. There are in total of almost 35,000 pieces of great works. Excluding the Mona Lisa, the most famous painting in the entire history, works of Rembrandt, Rubens, Fragonard and Titian can also been seen in Louvre. Furthermore, Louvre also houses many other types of exhibitions like archeology, history and architecture. Louvre is enormous and you could easily spend a week to explore its rich exhibits. In fact, tickets are sold separately for different sections. To be the most efficient, study the map of this museum before you go and decide what you want to see. Also try to go at a time, such as in the morning, to avoid the crowd. Except on Tuesdays, the museum is open daily, from 9:00 AM to 18:00 PM. There are also evening openings until 9:45 PM, on Wednesdays and Fridays. The entry costs about 9 Euros and free for children under 18.
