Champs-Elysees
The Avenue des Champs-Elysees is the most prestigious and broadest avenue in Paris and is one of the most famous streets in the world. The Champs-Elysees are 2 kilometers long and 80 meters wide. The rents on Champs-Elysees remain the most expensive strip of real estate in Europe. The avenue runs for 2 kilometres (1.25 miles) in northwestern Paris, from the Place de la Concorde in to the the Arc de Triomphe. You will find beautiful renovated granite sidewalks along the avenue. The lower section near Concorde, is bordered with grass and chestnut trees, behind which stand the Grand and Petit Palais. Along the upper section from the lively Rond-point are stores, offices, movie theaters, luxury shops and sidewalk cafes. It is a great place for shopping. Many major events of France happen on Champs-Elysees. Every year on Bastille Day, the largest military parade in Europe goes down the Champs-Elysees. As well, since 1975, the traditional last stage of the Tour de France is on the Champs-Elysees stage. The subsequent awards ceremony is also held directly on the Avenue. Huge gatherings for celebration occasionally take place on the Champs-Elysees. These popular events may include New Year's Eve, or when France won the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
