Basilique du Sacre-Coeur, or the Sacre-Coeur Basilicain English, literally means "Basilica of the Sacred Heart". It is a Roman Catholic basilica and a popular landmark in Paris, France. The basilica is located at the summit of the Montmartre. It is, in fact, the highest point in the city of Paris. The Catholic Church was built between 1870 and 1919, after the French were defeated in the Franco-Prussian war. Afterwards, the basilica was planned as a guilt offering and a vote of confidence to cure France's misfortunes. There are plenty of beautiful things to see when you visit the Basilique du Sacre-Coeur. The exterior of the basilica is built of a frost-resistant travertine stone that constantly weathers out its calcite, so that it bleaches with age to a chalky whiteness. One of the first things you will notice is the bronze statues of Joan of Arc and King Saint Louis IX. You will also find a few golden mosaics glowing in the dim. The mosaic of Christ in Majesty in the apse is one of the world's largest mosaics and there is a striking fresco of Christ's Passion at the back of the altar. Another prominent feature is the Savoyarde bell, which is as heavy as nineteen tons. Further, a popular area is the meditation garden which features a beautiful fountain. Yet another highlight of the Sacre Coeur is the organ. It is very large, featuring 90 speaking stops. Finally, you should definitely go to the top of the dome of the basilica for an unbelievable view of Paris. In short, there are so many incredible features at the Sacre-Coeur Basilica.
