The Madame Tussauds Hong Kong is a wax museum displaying lifelike wax figures of regional and international celebrities.
The Madame Tussauds Wax Museum of Hong Kong had its grand opening in the millennium year, 2000. The history of Madame Tussauds can be traced back to year 1770. Madame Tussaud learnt the skill of waxing likeness with Dr. Philippe Curtius and became the art tutor to King Louis XVI’s sister at the Palace of Versailles in France. During the French Revolution, Madame Tussauds was forced to make death masks of the executed aristocrats for proving her allegiance to the feudalistic nobles. She left for Britain in the early 19th century and held a series of exhibitions along her travel of the revolutionary relics and effigies of the public heroes and baddies.
As time passed, the exhibitions of Madame Tussauds were like a kind of traveling newspapers, providing insights of global events and bringing the people in the headlines face-to-face with the public. In 1835, Madame Tussauds launched her first permanent base of her exhibitions on Baker Street, London, and moved to its present site on Marylebone Road in 1884. Some of Madame Tussauds’ original and earliest work and relics are still on exhibit in London, including the death masks she was forced to make during the French Revolution and the guillotine that was used for beheading Marie Antoinette.
