Lalashan, was officially named Tatkuanshan in 1975, but still widely known by its former name Lalashan. "Lala" meaning beautiful in native language was given by the Taiya tribe. The northern mountainous areas around Paling which are known for the natural red cypress trees, includes the 22 stalks of the aged-old giant red cypress wood stood in strange postures. It holds the largest stands of ancient red hinoki cypress trees in Taiwan. Along the 3.7 km long observation walkway, there are various species of plants for visitors to admire and researchers to study. In addition, there are also rare species of wild animals such as the Taiwan Black Bears, Macacus Monkeys and Mountain Goats which are protected species. With the presence of these animals, the area has also become an important wildlife preservation area on the island. The Forestry Department has built a parking lot, visitor walkways, description plagues, trails and sheds. This mountain area is now a popular tourist spot along the North Cross Island Highway.

Lalashan was known after the discovery of many giant red cypress trees. A well reserved area becoming finest attractions for natural admirers. From the cypress woodland, visitors can track along the Bafu ridge, through easy trails leading to the entrance of the mountain peak. Along the way, you will see giant trees, rare fungus plant, and flowers. After an hour of walk, you will reach a green plateau; and start your way to the peak for another half an hour. For hikers, the trails are easily identifiable and accessible. The peak, higher than 2,000 meters, affords splendid panoramic views of the surrounding mountains such as Fuchishan (Husband and Wife Mountain), Chatienshan (Pot Sky Mountain), Huimushan (Cypress Mountain), Tatmanshan and more.

Baling is a town located at the middle of the North Cross Island Highway. It is divided into upper, middle and lower section. The section at the North Cross Island Highway is the Lower Baling. To go from the lower section (Siabaling) to Upper Baling (Shanbaling), visitor needs to use the road (200 meters high) behind the Northern Cross Road village. The middle section (Chungbaling) and lower sections are fruit producing areas. Every year from March to April, trees are ridden with fruits all along the roads, and peaches from Lalashan is famous island-wide. At this high altitude, which affords wide view of the surrounding areas, it has become a very popular tourist spot along the North Cross Island Highway.
