Beijing National Stadium, nicknamed "the Bird's Nest" for its unique architecture, is settled at Olympic Green, located east of the Beijing National Aquatics Center in beijing. The stadium has replaced the original intended venue of the Guangdong Olympic Stadium. Covering 258,000 square meters (330 meters long by 220 meters wide) and owning the capacity of 100,000 spectators. It has about 204,000 square meters usable area. Beijing National Stadium will host the opening and the closing ceremonies, main track and field competitions, and the final of male football during the 2008 Summer Olympics. Beijing National Stadium was designed by Herzog & de Meuron (Swiss) and China Architecture Design Institute, groundbreaking in December 2003 and accomplished in March 2008. The stadium totally cost up to 423 million USD. Beijing National Stadium is exteriorly decorated with several layers of silver steel beams, which has been the emblem of Beijing Olympic Green. It was built with 36 km of unwrapped steel, with a combined weight of 45,000 tones. The hydrodynamic design inside the stadium enables spectators on the grandstand, regular seats or VIP seats to enjoy sunshine and breeze naturally and comfortably. On the other hand, it offers more than 200 seats for the physically challenged.
