Yuedong Recreation Area (Moon Cave)

Yuedong means “ Moon Cave” in Chinese, is a mysterious cave located in Fengpin, Hualien. Moon Cave is also called Moon Well, is a water cave which the water level varies in accordance to the waxing and waning of the moon. Keeping a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius all year round, the caves are warm in winter and cool in summer. Refreshing waters from the mountains above seep down through the cave cracks. There are stalactite, stone pillars, a black flowing stream and bats inside the chambers. The cave is a sacred ground for the native Taiwan tribes. The beautiful cave inhabits many giant eels in the water. The local claim one of the eel lived a thousand year called the millennium eel weighing over 10 kilo is capable of attacking humans. So it is safer to enter the cave by boats and flashlights. Guided Tour is provided with interesting tales and facts of the mysterious cave. The Moon Cave is also a great place to examine bats, whether for leisure or research purposes. In one of the summit, inhabit hundreds of thousands of bats, adding a more mystical atmosphere. The cave is filled with wonders, waiting for you to discover them in the darkness. It is an exciting and mysterious visit.

From Hualien, take the No.11 Provincial Route southward passing Zhianlio, Suilien, Fungping, Shitiping and you shall arrive
By Bus
From Hualien Od Train Station, take the Hualien Express Coach heading towards Jingpu. Alight at Shitiping, and follow the signs to walk to the destination.
