Taoyuan City ─ Longtan Pond
Longtan, the pond of the dragon, is one of the townships in Taoyuan County. It has been selected as the “Most Characteristic Township in Taiwan”, and also has been selected as one of the best places for retirement.
The Longtan Pond is one of Longtan's most famous landmarks. The total area of this natural pond is about 0.17 square kilometers. The dragon boat race is held here annually. There is a statue of Qu Yuan near the pond. Qu Yuan is a Chinese patriotic poet in the Warring States Period who committed ritual suicide by jumping into the Milou River with a great rock. The original Dragon Boat Festival was a rescue attempt mission to save Qu Yuan. However, it had become a festival to commemorate Qu Yuan.
A magnificent temple named “Nantian” is located in the center of the pond. Visitors may reach the temple by walking through a red suspension bridge or a traditional Chinese style white bridge. The pond is actually located in a park. The park has an arch bridge, a bike trail, a children’s playground, a kiddy pool with dragon statue, a lookout, a memorial hall, a walking trail, a water plant area, pavilions, and outdoor fitness facilities. Many local people love to go fishing here.
The night view at the park is fantastically beautiful. The water will reflect the blue light of the lookout, the golden light of the temple, and the rainbow colored light of the suspension bridge. It would be an excellent place for dating. By Bus:
1. Take MRT to Gongguan (捷運公館站) and exit from Exit 1.
2. Transfer to Longtan (龍潭) by taking Yalan Bus (亞聯客運) “Taipei-Longtan-Hsinchu Route” (Bus comes every 10-20 minutes daily).
3. Get off on Jhongzhen Rd., Longtan Township (龍潭鄉中正路), and take taxi to the Longtan Pond (龍潭池)
