Event: Taipei International Birdwatching Fair

The Taipei City Government has been focusing to restore public attention on sustaining and preserving the ecological environment through a series of activities, exhibition, education, artistic performance, and wild screen festival. In the year 1999, the city government collaborated with The Wild Bird Society of Taipei and began the first Taipei International Birdwatching Fair. The event is held during the end of the summer when winter migrating bird flocks in Guandu, Taipei. The migrating attracts birders from around the world. BirdLife International, Indochina branch once invited member representative from over 10 different countries to join the fair. Aside from bird watching, exhibition and presentation are hold in the fair to promote cultural exchange and environment preserving. It has become an international event for both biological and cultural purpose.

The rich natural habitat of the wetland landform is what attracts the migrating birds to shelter in Guandu. The impact of modern human construction and technology hit the wetland environment pretty hard, causing them to gradually shrink and eventually vanish. Wetlands play an important role in our environment, functioning in water purification, flood control, and shoreline stability. Wetlands are also considered the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems, serving the home to wide variety of plant and animal life. The Taipei International Birdwatching Fair promotes the importance of the wetland environment as well as the feathered species. So besides admiring the beautiful creatures, you may also appreciate the beautiful scenery of the wetland.

Bird-watching may seem like an event only for birders, but Taipei International Birdwatching Fair is actually packed with exhibitions and activity like photo gallery, competitions, showcase, face painting, interactive games. It is an event designed for family fun and birders altogether. Just remember to pack light, wears in green, grey, brown, bring your binocular, camera and maybe your laptop if you wish to share your own collection.
