Taichung Da Jia Mazu Pilgrimage Festival

The Mazu Pilgrimage can be counted as one of the largest folk culture events in Taiwan. This special religious event like Mazu pilgrimage has been recognized by UNESCO as a world intangible heritage. The actual date and time for Mazu Pilgrimage Festival is determined by casting moon-shaped divination blocks during the Lantern Festival. And, this year the festival will be held in April 17th at 11:00pm. In accordance with tradition, during the 9-day, 8-night pilgrimage there are ten primary ceremonies: prayers for peace, mounting the palanquins, the departure of the procession, the arrival of the procession, prayers for prosperity, wishes for longevity, the return of the procession, and the safe reinstallation of the statues.
After the ceremony, thousands of followers will follow Mazu’s statue carried by the sedan chair. During the tour, more followers will continually come to worship and prostrate themselves under Mazu’s sedan for receiving the blessings because it is believed that one would get fortunes and become prosperous by going underneath the sedan chair. The total distance of Mazu Pilgrimage is 330km with walk up to 12 hours per day, and the route of parade across 4 coastal cities in central Taiwan, includes Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin and Chiayi. Over hundred thousand followers come to join the tour from Da Jia Jenn Lann Temple and pass through a total of 21 towns and more than 80 temples and then back to Da Jia. The followers can either traveling on foot or in all kinds of transportation.
