The firefly season begins from April to the end of May. The fireflies’ habitat requires the primitive state of the natural environment. Any pollution or modern technology may sabotage this delicate insect. Preserving the natural state of environment is necessary to maintain the living of fireflies. As the modern technology and human factors affecting more and more nature grounds, fireflies are to be seen only in the high mountains or preserved areas. Firefly viewing has become a luxurious request for the people now. Here are some of the places where you can enjoy the little flickering stars in Taiwan.

Yangmingshan National Park
Date: 2015/4/17~5/24
Events/Activities: Guided firefly tours are available. Advance reservation is required to join these splendid guided firefly tours. In addition, visitors may also explore the abundant sites of Yangmingshan National Park such as Yangmingshan Hot Spring and Cingtiangang, as well as enjoy fresh mountain delicacies for a colorful Taipei travel.

Tucheng Chengtian Temple
Opening Date: 2015/4/16 Open
Location: Tung Blossom Park, Tucheng District, New Taipei City
Events/Activities: April to May is the tung flower blooming season in Taiwan. Tung Blossom Park is a wonderful place for a relaxed strolling in the park with the fallen white flower petals on the ground. Moreover, they have found hidden habitats of firefly in this neighborhood in recent years. Visitor now may enjoy a beautiful flower viewing in the day, and appreciating the fireflies by night.

Taoyuan Firefly Exhibition Center
Opening Date: 2015/04/16
Location: No.31, Daqingkeng, Guishan Township, Taoyuan County 333, Taiwan
Events/Activities: Taoyuan Firefly Exhibition Center is located in Guishan Town of Taoyuan County, the exhibition center is designed into 6 areas related to fireflies. Firefly zone is opened every year during firefly season around April to September for you to enjoy a great time with your loved ones.

Beipu, Hsinchu
Date: April-June
Location: Beipu Town Town, Hsinchu County
Events/Activities: Before a wonderful firefly tour in the evening, visitors are invited to visit local historical sites, and experience Hakka cultures and delicacies such as Hakka Mochi (glutinous rice), and DIY Hakka Beipu Grinding Tea for a wonderful Hsinchu travel.

Tung-Shih Forest Area, Taichung
Date: March-May
Location: Dongshi District, Taichung City
Events/Activities: Recognized as Yangmingshan National Park of central Taiwan, Tung Shih Forest Area is a forest park decorated by seasonal flowers and maple leaves. The maple season is from November to December in Tung Shih Forest Garden where visitors not only can observe the tantalizing radish leaves but also be able to see the romantic sunrise and the sea of clouds. It is also well-known for spotting fireflies during March to May.

Xitou Nature Education Area (Xitou Forest Recreation Area)

Date: April-May
Location: Lugu Tourist Center, Nantou
Events/Activities: The enchanted Sitou (Xitou) Nature Education Area in Lugu Town of Nantou features abundant natural resources and ecosystems, including bamboo forest, divine trees, ginkgo forest, mountain trails, tea farms, and fireflies. Guided firefly tours are provided to limited no. of visitors, advance reservation is required.

Alishan Firefly Festival
Date: April-June
Location: Alishan Forest Recreation Park
Events/Activities: A total of 62 firefly species have been recorded in Taiwan with 38 species found in Alishan area. Firefly is best-viewed around April to June every year and Alishan is the perfect Taiwan destination for fireflies as it owns 1/3 of Taiwan’s fireflies, including Luciola cerata, Curtos sauteri Olivier, Luciola anceyi, Luciola satoi Jeng and Yang and many others offering an excellent opportunity for children to learn the importance of preserving nature.
Hualien Liyu Lake

Meiling Scenic Area, Tainan
Date & Time: April-May
Location: Meiling Scenic Area
Events/Activities: Located in the western outskirt of Nanchange, Meiling Scenic Area, with the Jhuzihjian Mountain behind, boasts fabulous panoramic views of the Zengwen Reservoir on the north and Chianan Plain on the on the west. With the ideal landscape, Meiling Scenic Area is Tainan’s major habitat, where more than 19 firefly species have been recorded.

Kaohsiung Namasia
Date & Time: 2015/4/3-4/25
Location: Namasia, Kaohsiung
Events/Activities: Namasia District Office has held overnight camps in April for people who enjoy an astonish firefly tour and night sky. Since Namasia is a well-preserved firefly habitat, participants are able to attend the fireflies’ fluorescent party at night during this period. The camp also designed to promote the preservation of traditional aboriginal culture and custom from indigenous tribes in this area.

Hualien Liyu Lake
Date: 2015/3/27-5/3
Location: Liyu Lake、Cingyang Farm
Events/Activities: Located at the foot of Mt. Liyu in Soufong Town of Hualien County, Taiwan, Hualien Liyu Lake is the largest inner lake in eastern Taiwan. Every year around March to May is the best time to spot fireflies and butterflies in Hualien Liyu Lake area.
