Sun Moon Lake has been one of Taiwan’s main attractions for foreign and local travelers. Located in Nantou County in central Taiwan, the mountainous landscape and the largest lake forms a breath taking scenery. The east side of the lake resembles a sun while the west side resembles a moon, thus the name. It offers an extraordinary sunrise and sunset view, which is not to be missed in any Taiwan travel. It is also a popular place to hold all kind of sport events such as swimming across the Sun Moon Lake, cycling, marathon and many more.

The annual swimming carnival of Sun Moon Lake is one of the largest and organized open water swimming events. The swimming competition began in 1983, each time of the year near the moon festival, all the swimmers from different regions in Taiwan and abroad gathering at Sun Moon Lake Chaowu Pier to participate in this grand swimming event. The event welcomes both professional and amateur, it’s for the swimmers who challenge them self. The entire swimming distance is 3 km. It is ranked among the Top 50 Open Water Swims in Asia and the World's Top 100 Open Water Swims. The carnival also holds the non-competitive, no time limited event for 25,000 participants, but all must use a swim buoy.
