Tung flower plays a significant role in the Hakka culture in the past as one of their economical resource. Now it becomes a scenery attraction for everyone to enjoy. Tung flower blooms around March to May in Taiwan. It is one of Taiwan’s major floral events and culture celebration. Tung trees were mostly planted at places where Hakka people live and are a significant symbol of Taiwan Hakka culture. Tung Trees can be mostly found in northwestern Taiwan which can grow up to 20 meters tall. Large numbers of Tung Trees were planted during the Japanese colonization period on the hills of Miaoli as the location holds ideal condition for its growth. The Hakka people made living by extracting oil from Tung Tree seeds, flowers as food ingredients, and wood as raw materials in the past. Today, Tung trees are no longer the dependant crops of Hakka as there are cheaper alternatives, but Hakka people still cherish for the good things that Tung trees have given them in the past. Now, each year when the Tung flower blooms, visitors from around the island gather as the snow-white splendor decorates the hills.
