Nantou County is the second largest county of Taiwan. It is also the only landlocked county in Taiwan. Its mountainous landscape makes it one of the top tourist attractions; Sun Moon Lake is located in this county. The east side of the lake resembles a sun while the west side resembles a moon, so the name. It has the best sunrise and sunset view, which you cannot be missing. It is also a popular place to hold all kind of sport events such as swimming across the Sun Moon Lake, cycling, marathon and many more.

Annual swimming carnival of Sun Moon Lake event is one of the most largest and organized open water swim. The event began in 1983, and each year around the moon festival time all the good swimmers from different regions in Taiwan and abroad gathering at Sun Moon Lake Chaowu Pier to participating this grand swimming event. The entire swimming distance is 3km. It is ranked among the Top 50 Open Water Swims in Asia and the World's Top 100 Open Water Swims. After this event expend to greater scale, the non-competitive, no time limited event is now hold around 25,000 participants who all must use a swim buoy.
